Wessex Archaeology: Saxon amber beads
Cliffs End Farm: Wessex Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned by Millwood Designer Homes to excavate land at Cliffs End Farm, Ramsgate. Earlier investigations had shown that the site had been occupied during the Early and Late Bronze Age (2400-700BC) and again in the Early Saxon period (AD 410-650).
Wessex Archaeology was founded as the Wessex Archaeological Committee on 1 May 1979 - the last of the regional units to be created by the Department of Environment (the DoE, now English Heritage). This brought together individual archaeologists in Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Wiltshire. In 1983 the name changed to the Trust for Wessex Archaeology and it became the not-for-profit charitable company which it remains today.
